The G.R.D. (Group Racing Developments) was founded in late 1971 by a group of ex. Lotus employees when it stopped producing racing cars for sale to customers. Main man was Mike Warner who set up his own facilities in Norfolk (East of England), capable of producing high quality Formula 3 and Sports cars. The Swiss Jo Maquart was hired as the designer, and the experienced John Miles, a former official Lotus driver was the main test driver. Several names immediately became famous behind the wheel of the “well-born” GRDs: Roger Williamson, Torn Walkinshaw, Andy Sutcliffe, Alan Jones, Dave Walker, Tony Brise, Jorg Obermoser (who would later build the TOJ prototypes based on the GRD) , the Japanese Tetsuo Ikuzawa and Hirochi Kazato or the Portuguese Jorge Pinhol, who raced in F3 in England (GRD 372) in 1972 without much success.
Later, Obermoser bought the largest part of GRD to start his own cars: Toy Racing cars.
